Don Bosco - Formation
Written by Albeiro Rodas

Hello. This page is dedicated to every young man or young woman interested in following Jesus as a religious person, priest, sister, nun, monk, missioner or... Salesian of Don Bosco.

Probably you have many questions to do. I try to put as much questions as possible with some concrete answers (trying to be much as clear as possible.) You can make suggestions in the comments. You can send me an email too ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it - Father Albeiro) for a more confidential question. Use also my Skype (Albeiror24), my Facebook (Albeiro Rodas) or my Twitter (SDBofCambodia). In any contact you can keep your privacy as much as you want, for example using nick names. Seminarians, young religious or anyone with concerns is welcome to email me, let a comment or pray for vocations.

I live in a place where there are not Salesians, how can I contact them?

You can email me telling me your location and I will help you to contact the nearest Salesian office.

I study in a Non-Salesian institution, can I apply to be a Salesian, though I am not a pupils of the Salesians?

Yes, you can. There are many Salesians of Don Bosco coming from non-Salesian schools and they are very good sons of Don Bosco.

I am interested in know the Salesians, but I am seeing other religious institutions. Is it okay?

Yes, you are a young person in search. We call it discernment. You can contact different religious communities. The Salesians will not get upset if you see other options and even will help you to make your mind according with the elements of your own discernment. The most important is the following of Jesus in the Catholic Church.

I am not yet baptized. Can I be a Salesian?

You can be a Salesian, but your first step is to say yes to Jesus as a Christian. After your receive the Sacrament of baptize, you must spend a time to discern your own vocation.

I am not yet confirmed. Can I be a Salesian?

Yes. But is advisable to receive the Sacrament of confirmation before your Noviciate.

I am married. Can I be a Salesian?

Yes. But not as a consecrated religious. You can join the Salesian Cooperators that are an Association created by Don Bosco for lay people who want to support his mission.

I am very old. Can I be a Salesian?

Probably you are a late vocation. We have many Salesians who join the community after 30 years old, 40, 50 and even 60. You can contact the Salesians and they will discern and help you in your case.

I admire Don Bosco very much, I like to be a Salesian, but frankly I do not like to work with young people. Is any other possibility for me in the community?

Unfortunately no. Salesians are religious men and women dedicated to the education, formation and holiness of young people. You can join other religious group in the Church according with your vocation and you can remain a friend of Don Bosco.

I am a priest or I belong to another religious group. Can I become a Salesian?

Yes. There are Salesians who have been diocesan priests or members of another religious group and they discovered their Salesian vocation. Please contact the Salesians and contact also your own superiors to coordinate the discernment process. Remember that the Salesian superiors will put much attention to the observations of your current superiors in order to accept you.
