African AIDS: the facts that demolish the myths

E-mail Print PDF

The mystery of why AIDS has been so devastating in Africa has been solved. And it’s not lack of condoms.

Benedict XVI’s recent comment on the African AIDS crisis -- "the scourge cannot be resolved by distributing condoms; quite the contrary, we risk worsening the problem" – provoked an international sensation all out of proportion to its half-sentence length.

The changing face of the Salesian mission

E-mail

Rome. With the 142nd missionary expedition group now gathered for the traditional preparatory course before receiving the Missionary Cross from the Rector Major in the Basilica at Valdocco later in the month, it is interesting to note the changing face of this expeditionary series which began with Don Bosco nearly a century and a half ago.

Perhaps the most notable feature this time around is the Salesian Family composition of the group: 31 SDBs, 10 FMAs, 5 CSJs (Sisters of Charity of Jesus), 3 CMB (Community of the Mission of Don Bosco), and an as yet not fully specified number of lay missionaries through JyD (Jovenes y Desarollo) and from Italy, but at last count 13.

Fifteen new Salesians for East Timor

Fatumaca, East Timor. 'Where is my gift?' might sound like a cliché thought for one celebrating ones birthday, yet something is likely missing if gifts are absent at birthday celebrations.

Japan: 6 months later, a sombre memory, then celebration....

E-mail

Tokyo: 26 September 2011 -- More than 6 months have gone by since that terrible 11 March, when a catastrophic earthquake and an apocalyptic tsunami of almost unimaginable extent and power devastated more than 500 km of Japan's north-west coastline, resulting in some 20,000 fatalities.

Recalling this moment of disaster was the topic and tenor of prayer and a fraternal afternoon involving more than 250 people representing the 6 Salesian parishes in the Tokyo area. This is also a yearly traditional gathering, which took place this year on 25 September, Sunday, in the Himonya parish church at Tokyo Meguro.

It has been a 42 year tradition thus far. It began with the rosary lead by the parish youth, who did so creatively and devoutly. Taize hymns created a particular setting, as one of the older participants commented: 'it was the first time for me to experience this'.

Near-death experience of a teenager

E-mail Print PDF

'There was this bright light above me,' Ben Breedlove

Kep City, Cambodia. This 21st globalized century brings many things online. A teenager of 18 died on Christmas eve in Austin, Texas. His name was Ben Breedlove. He did not write songs or appeared in any movie of Hollywood. He was just a good boy. Then he used to talk through Youtube probably in front to the computer of his bedroom, as many other teenagers are doing right now - we hope that more good young people would talk more good things on the Internet too. A week before he died of a cardiac arrest, he suffered hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), he produced his last Youtube that is now so popular as any Justin Bieber video - I mention Bieber because also he began his career on Yotube, by the way.

'It's more comfortable for people to think of abortion as a political decision, or a right. But I am not a right. I am a human being. I am the reality. Gently I put the question, if abortion is about women's rights, then where were mine? There was no radical feminist screaming for my rights on that day.'
